I've been very optimistic about this new movie. The casting and the redesigns of both the ship and uniforms have been pretty damn fine with me. I can't expect anybody to reuse a set that was made in the '60s on a $50 budget.

I'm a moderate Trek fan at best, but damn, that trailer is impressive.

I'd almost agree, but I've never been a huge fan of clip trailers. I think everything in it looks fantastic, and the one shot of Quinto materializing on Vulcan's surface in the crouching position looks amazing. But what hasn't been alleviated to me, yet, is just the use of continuity. It'll be interesting to see how they handle Chekov since he wasn't even on the Enterprise until the start of TOS S2. He never, officially, served under Pike. Not that I care 'cause I haven't seen the reasons to how they do it.
Sulu, in 'Where No Man Has Gone Before', was in a blue shirt and attached to the science division. He was still Sulu (and not Takei as some other character) and then he transfered to Ops after Gary Mitchell (the previous Ops officer) was killed.
I'm also interested in seeing how Cadet Kirk, after this mission, goes on to serve as an instructor at the Academy (Lt. Kirk met then Cadet Gary Mitchell) and the previous postings (Republic and Farragut) Kirk had before serving on the Enterprise.
I know they're using some books to fill in some blanks in canon, and it's supposed to be fairly respectful to continuity. So, with that in mind I'm still gonna have my reservations until I see that movie. BUT they've already contradicted a huge part of continuity right from the start: Pike wasn't the first Enterprise Captain. When he took command of the ship in 2251 that was for the Enterprise's second five-year mission. He was then Captain for 13 years to command the Enterprise for 2+/- tours. That's established in TOS 'The Menagerie' which ended up putting the first pilot 'The Cage' in continuity.
McCoy wasn't even the CMO for the first 2 episodes of TOS. He replaced Mark Piper by the 3rd Episode. And Piper replaced Dr. Boyce who was CMO under Pike.
- I'm not making this shit up. It's all TV canon and there's a TON more I'm not even going in to.
I got all over the TV show ENTERPRISE's shit for it's blatant lack of continuity and for going places it didn't need to go, which only undercut continuity more they tried to explain it! The movie seems to be going places sooner and faster, so until I see it I can only get excited for how everything looks. I love the revised uniforms and I can easily erase those sweaters from history with those stupidly bulky necks in favor of these. I'm really easy with revising the look of Star Trek now they we're beyond the limits of funds and stuff.
So, I'm not entirely sold. Hence, why I gotta see this movie.

I'm just hoping its a good movie that is successful in reinvigorating the Trek franchise. If it takes making a new timeline, so be it.

I'm just hoping its a good movie that is successful in reinvigorating the Trek franchise. If it takes making a new timeline, so be it. First off, Welcome Mike! Be sure to head over to the Welcome Mat and introduce yourself to the crew. I'm not a TREK fan, but I will admit that I like how they're handling the roll out of this film.

Far from being a Trekkie, I was always blown away by the proportions this series has effected their fans around the world. Trekkies seem so passionate that I was always giving them the benefit of the doubt. JJ Abrams has, for a long time in my mind, been attached to a lot of projects that I hold dearly. (See the underrated Alias, Lost, Cloverfield, even MI:3 was decent)
that being said, the new envisioning of Star Trek by a self-proclaimed non-Trekkie sure helps me cross the bridge into at least being mildly interested. What I think this movie bets on, and accordingly so, is the cast. Zachary Quinto is a recognizable, though despicable, face and supporting characters portrayed by the likes of Simon Pegg (which I'm an extreme man-fan of, you don't believe me? I saw the romantic comedy Run, Fatboy, Run by myself. Ok...I didn't go the extra mile to see How to alienate people & lose friends but still...) as well as Eric Bana, Winona Ryder & John Cho.
Bottom line, the trailer looks wicked and this is actually on the top of my list as far as upcoming 2009 releases.
And for hardcore fans hesitant toward the change of vision...Star Trek franchise is on its death bed and if not for the help of Dr Abrams, could well have died of a glamourless death. So just go along with this, you'll be glad!

I've been a lifelong STAR TREK fan and Day One when this movie opens, I'm there. And as a shameless plug: check out STAR TREK: FOTHERAN & MALLORY. trek.bhyphen.com/ It's got a whole buncha cool stories written by Jason Cleaver and myself.
