entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/books/article4329977.ece"Since Georges Melies' 1902 'Trip to the Moon' cinema has been in love with science fiction. The romance has been rocky though, with many potential classics lost to spiralling budgets or studio whim. David Hughes the author of a new book, The Greatest Sci-Fi Movies Never Made, shares his favourites with us."I read Hughes' book recently, and it has about a metric ton of fascinating information about science fiction films that were never made (but came close to production), or films that would have been made differently than what ended up on the screen. Anything you want to know about the torturous making of Alien 3 is in there. This article doesn't mention it, but according to Hughes, Philip Kaufman's ideas for what would have been the first Star Trek film were off the wall. He wanted to kill off most of the cast of the show in the first ten minutes, and have Spock and a Klingon general take an acid trip. Yes, really. The book has plenty of great stories like this (the Times article doesn't really do it justice).

I would have liked to have seen the original ideas for ALIEN3 filmed; the one with the wooden planet sounded really bizarre and off the wall.
