I have already talked about what may be my all-time favorite Newman film, Slap Shot, in the episode on sports movies.... But I most likely will pull out The Road To Perdition so I can watch Newman's scenes with Tom Hanks again. That's some great storytelling.

I like that idea a lot and I would probably take the shot to talk about some obscure Paul Newman movies that never get mentioned when his films are talked about. Movies like THE OUTRAGE, FORT APACHE THE BRONX (which was highly controversial at the time of it's theatrical release) and the incredibly baffling QUINTET.

R.I.P.
Newman also starred in one of Hitchcock's lesser-known films, Torn Curtain. Honestly, it's lesser known for good reasons, but it has a few good scenes.
I've heard so many conflicting opinions about Quintet, (the guys from the Mondo Movie podcast reviewed it a couple of years ago, not favorably) that I'm curious to see it. It has to be one of the least seen Altman films (along with Images).

If any other director had made this movie I don't think it would get much mention these days. Even the most rabid Hitchcock fans I know say they don't like this one much. QUINTET...again, how much you want to see it depends on how much of a Newman or Robert Altman fan you are. It's a difficult movie to describe. The visuals are far more interesting than the actual story or performances. Along with "Zardoz" this has to be one of the goofiest, strangest sci-fi movies to have come out of the 70's.

Actually it isn't. I've seen SLAPSHOT on TCM as well as other movies far more violent and explicit in terms of sex/language than SLAPSHOT. Films such as RAGING BULL, TAXI DRIVER, THE EXORCIST, PLATOON. TCM usually shows movies of that nature really late at night, around 11PM and after midnight. The host Robert Osborne will usually explain during the course of his introducing the movie that TCM has a firm policy of showing movies unedited and uncut but they realize that some people are sensitive to explicit language/violence/sex and that's why the movie is being shown so late.
