Should we do an Elizabeth Taylor episode? Any suggestion as to which of her movies we should cover?

I think an Elizabeth Taylor episode would be great and if you do a show on her I think there is a federal law that states you have to cover Cleopatra.

A couple thoughts on the media hoopla for La Liz. One is that I can actually remember back when Entertainment Tonight had some, if not class, at least some quasi journalistic bona fides. The amount of material they got factually wrong in their tribute was surprising. The dreadfully unctuous Billy Bush and team got the same points correct, so a nod in their favor.
For someone who was a giant star (pun intended) with a lavishly scrutinized private life -- you knew next to nothing about her children. I wasn't even sure how many she had. That's a tribute when people pay lip service all the time to keeping their kids out of the spotlight.
I hate all that "Last Star" hooey. This is someone who stopped appearing in hit films in the 1960s. Box office contemporaries of hers -- Clint, Michael Caine -- are both doing their best work today and are still vital and relevant, to an unprecedented degree. If the point is that she was a star from the golden age, Olivia deHaviland and Mickey Rooney are both still alive and were both bigger stars. ( de Haviland is truly the last golden age star left, in addition to being, in my mind, a better actress than Bette Davis and Katherine Hepburn, and more beautiful than either.)
And not to be heretical or disrespectful -- she did so much great work on AIDS, and was great in VIRGINIA WOOLFE and PLACE IN THE SUN -- but for me Taylor joins John Wayne as the two most, I'm sorry, overrated screen icons. Too soon?

We're planning on devoting some time to Ms. Taylor's legacy when we record the review episode for this quarter at tomorrow's recording session. I will say that one thing we are going to explore is the idea that Taylor's worth is not so much as an actress, but for providing the template for the 'scandalous jet-setter' that has been the pattern followed (nowhere near as successfully) by the Lindsey Lohans, Paris Hiltons and Britney Spears of the world...

It never fails to crack me up that whenever CLEOPATRA is discussed, nobody ever talks about the actual movie. It's always renowned for being the movie that bankrupted a studio and the beginning of the Burton/Taylor romance. Matter of fact, when I first watched CLEOPATRA I was totally taken by surprise that Rex Harrison played a major character for the first half of the movie as previously I had never so much as heard his name connected with CLEOPATRA.

Cleopatra is one of those movies that everyone is required to watch once and then it will never been seen again. Kind of like Schindler's List.

And I've seen bits and pieces during the years. Usually if I click on TCM and it's on, I won't turn it off. I'll have it as background noise while doing chores and such. SCHINDLER'S LIST I've seen three times I think.

I own the DVD of CLEO and have watched the picture a couple of times, listened to all the commentary and watched the feature-length doc narrated by Robert Culp many times, it's one of the great DVDs. I'm w/ Derrick on the number of times I've seen SCHINDLER and will again.
