I loved this, especially when you guys mentioned shows that I couldn't recall / barely remember.
For some reason I picked up the first season of CASTLE on the street and the best thing on that disc is a skit between Nathan Fillian and Cannell where he the actor shadows him for the day. It's very funny -- much better than the series itself. And speaking of DVDs that fell off a truck, for some reason whole seasons of WISEGUY were perrennial titles you used to be able to get on the street for <$10. So maybe you can pick those up cheap still.
Also, SILK STALKINGS was suuuch a guilty pleasure of mine back in the 90s.
And I really second Derrick on Cannell's books. I've read most of the Shane Scullys and several of his stand-alones, and they're all good and all serious. He wasn't just cashing in on his celebrity name and cranking out books with 300 chapters that are all one page long, like the cynical James Patterson industry. And I think he even had Elvis Cole and Harry Bosch make subtle little cameos in his works, which I think proves guys like Crais and Connelly dug him enough to think that was cool.
Plus, he was married to his high school sweetheart for something like 50 years of fame and fortune, and I know stuff like that doesn't make someone a good writer / artist, but I think it may reflect on why he's one of the guys you never hear anything bad about. At least I never did.
And you can't overstate his influence. Before WISEGUY you never heard the word "arc" in that TV context. As in "the Steelgrave arc."
