I liked it, with reservations. My biggest concern is that the first episode retells a story that's been depicted in several films already; the first episode reminded me more than slightly of Day of the Dead, 28 Days Later and (the non-zombie story) The Stand by Stephen King (which, if I remember correctly, also features a character traveling to Atlanta because of the Center of Disease Control). But it's only a first episode.
Damn. I know the young boy's name was Duane, but I didn't notice that his last name was Jones. Nice nod to Night of the Living Dead.
Spoiler alert:
This board doesn't offer inviso-text, right? I thought the scene where Rick Grimes sees the opening underneath a tank was a bit of a cheat. Not because there's an opening there, but because the walking dead don't follow him through it. They are smart enough to follow him under the tank, but not through the opening? If there was a scene where Grimes shuts a door on that opening from the inside, I missed it.

Considering that the director Frank Darabont has been so involved with faithfully adapting Stephen King's work to the screen (where the hell's my movie version of "The Long Walk", Frank?) I wasn't surprised that it felt so much like a Stephen King story. I figured it was going to be above average and I wasn't disappointed.
(Cut to River Song: "Spoilers!")
I knew when the cop blew away the little zombie girl that this show wasn't going to be watered down and I was right.

I absolutely loved the first episode. I was involved and scared at times. It felt true.

Considering that the director Frank Darabont has been so involved with faithfully adapting Stephen King's work to the screen Unfortunately, the only I really liked was The Mist (though I prefer King's ending to Darabont's). I don't like The Shawshank Redemption (King's story is much tougher and far less sentimental) or The Green Mile much. James

Glad to hear that I'm not the only person on Earth that was not too taken with THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. Beautiful looking film, but it was every prison cliche rolled into one picture. And everything was sewn up too perfectly and neatly for me.
I did like THE GREEN MILE and I do believe that Darabont is a talented director. This is definitely in evidence in the premiere epdisode of THE WALKING DEAD.
