Yeah, I saw this as well, as it was linked to off The Rap Sheet. So interesting, I checked some of the Biggers books from the library. Also, if you see the first of the recent Chan boxsets on Nextflix there's a doc on Chan Apano.

Just watched Warner Oland's last Chan picture -- CC IN MONTE CARLO. Pretty solid entry. Good pay-off. The accompanying docs go into how Oland was fairly always drunk on the set, and all his set-ups were done before noon, he was pretty far gone after that.

...that same disc had BEHIND THE CURTAIN, the first Chan movie for Fox from 1929, in which an actual Asian played Charlie, though he's only in like two scenes and the actor seems pretty unpolished and is seen looking off camera for direction or for his lines. The production is surprisingly lavish and hilariously overwrought with some pre-Code naughtiness.
