I've been looking at the "classic horror films" message board today, particularly the "horror hosts" folder. So I found this thread about "Creature Features," the horror host show on WNEW (channel 5) in New York City in the 70's. Apparently, the host, "the Creep" wasn't much of a host. But I've been riveted by the discussion of the strange image that opened the show (no one on the "classic horror films" board can agree was to what the image was, and it's apparently lost). Anyone here remember this show, and the image? Derrick? Tom? (The show's before my time, sorry...) I've become fascinated by this story! monsterkidclassichorrorforum.yuku.com/topic/20404/t/The-Creep-Creature-Features-WNEW-Channel-5.html?page=1

All I can tell you--and this is being coaxed from my memory--was that it was a solarized image of...something...that sort of writhed and pulsed briefly before The Creep came on to introduce this week's movie.

All I can tell you--and this is being coaxed from my memory--was that it was a solarized image of...something...that sort of writhed and pulsed briefly before The Creep came on to introduce this week's movie. Yep, someone on that message board says that the image was camera footage of a monitor image, which gave the picture the pulsating effect, and that the credits sequence on early episodes of Dr. Who used a similar effect. The opinions over there as to what the image was fall into two groups - either it was an image of Glenn Strange as Frankenstein's Monster in one of the Universal movies, or a picture of the Creep himself from an unusual angle. A couple of people on that message board even attempted to recreate the image. I have no idea why I've become obsessed over a credits image I've never seen, though!
