Great survey of the series. You hit the nail on the head that these pictures were -- startlingly -- G rated "family" adventures all but one with very bleak endings. Completely impossible to imagine in this day and age.
I recall seeing the Burton film the day it opened at the Ziegfeld and you could just feel all the energy escape from the packed house as that bummer played on -- the near hysteria that greeted Heston"s cameo notwithstanding. (Although, I confess that I find Estella Warren as the human girl spectacular to watch and an improvement over Nova.)
What burns me up about that movie is that it's one of those remakes that goes out of its way to "fix" the disturbing implications of the earlier film. Where once mankind destroyed itself, here the problem is...evil monkeys! Phew, glad we got that sorted and the audience need do no soul searching.

I got the sense from the remake that Burton wanted a surprise ending like the original had without truly thinking it through.
