I love this name used to characterize this slate of films as there are so many of these after the mid-60s, I've always felt, as they suited the Vietnam era of Americans getting into trouble in war-torn lands.
My one issue with Leone, never him -- but, rather his reputation, is that there's a baby-with-the-bathwater attitude that says all American Westerns of the 60s somehow pale in comparison to his films and I no longer buy into that. I think there are some very fine stateside Westerns of the time that hold up perfectly well, but the twin titans of Leone and Peckinpah critically overshadow everything else.
