I just...endured...the penultimate episode of the series (they're calling next week the 'Season Finale,' but the ratings tell me otherwise), and I think the writer here was being a little charitable. I'm surprised the article mentions Ames only once, even though she's even more winge-worthy than Ilsa... I'm glad I'm not the only person who pinpointed the lack of widescreen stuntwork in the second season as being a deficit. And, just as I knew from the second episode, they pulled the trigger on the Ilsa/Chance thing in the same sort of hamfisted way they've been doing characterization this season. I can't believe it's taken one season for me to do an about face on a series I embraced last year as one of my favorites...

I can't believe HUMAN TARGET went from sugar to shit in such a short time. But I knew things weren't right when they changed the theme music.
I figure that the money they used to spend on location shooting they now spend on salaries for Indira Varma and Janet Montgomery. As well as the new office. Has anybody noticed that they did two episodes that pretty much took place entirely in the office?
I could hear the nails being driven in the coffin when I saw the episode where the team went to the suburbs. I could swear they did that same script 20 years ago on A-TEAM.

Has anybody noticed that they did two episodes that pretty much took place entirely in the office? I could hear the nails being driven in the coffin when I saw the episode where the team went to the suburbs. I could swear they did that same script 20 years ago on A-TEAM. See, Derrick--I think the producers hired Indira Varma and Janet Montgomery not for their talent (Varma certainly has a lot of it--I didn't realize she was Suzy on TORCHWOOD until I looked up her cv; Montgomery has absolutely nothing...not even anything remotely resembling hotness) but because, as British television actresses they can actually pay them less than an established American television actress like, let's say, Emanuelle Vaugnier (who did a great recurring stint on season one). The whole thing about the office and the battle van seemed to be about wanting to look like the Bruckheimer-produced CBS shows, which have a similar high-tech gloss to it. And confining two episodes to the office allows them to use standing sets exclusively--which cuts down on costs). It's also why so many episodes were confined to indoor shooting.... There is a certain whiff of the series wanting to be more like the Bruckheimer shows as a whole...but by adding the sexual tension character and the comedy relief character (Hell, a SECOND comedy relief character in the odious Harry) that unbalanced the wonderful dynamic of the three leads and confining the episodes to the San Francisco setting and removing the widescreen stuntwork...they turned it into just another generic action show. And that's what I don't want. It's a shame, given that this season stomped all over the great characterization of Season One for...as the writer of the article mentions, fat jokes and that weird new burbling on that Chance has been doing...
