I need to re-listen to this show as I stuck my fingers in my ears having not seen this yet, but I've now caught up with this picture and found it just odious, -- it seemed to lay there. Maybe I didn't get the joke, but I thought it was shoddy filmmaking and so ugly. What am I missing?

I'm not sure. I loved just about everything about it -- it was over the top, it was fun, it was a total throwback to the grindhouse stuff.

Yeah, I'm sure I'll take heat for this, but I felt the picture required you to cut it way to much hip, ironic slack in order for it to work, on it's own merit it falls flat hard. It delivered all the visceral, cinematic excitement of a commercial for the Home Depot, and while I guess Trejo is a commanding presence, he's not much of an actor as evidenced by the fact that they really don't give the film or it's point of view over to his character. He actually doesn't have much screen time. And I loved the trailer in GRINDHOUSE, but really didn't care whether they painstaking recreated it here or not, if that exercise could be abandoned in the interest of something good. Unlike Rodriguez's' section of GRINDHOUSE which was a lurid throwback that worked for me (less so when watched in it's expanded movie form) , here I never gave a shit what was gonna happen at any point. Michelle Rodriquez, Jeff Fahey were good and Don Johnson was really good, but Stephen Seagal was a laughable embarrassment. (This from a former fan...)
Not nearly as good as BLACK DYNAMITE.

MACHETE and BLACK DYNAMITE make a perfect package for a DIY at home "Grindhouse" double-feature on a Saturday afternoon.

Not nearly as good as BLACK DYNAMITE. Well let's be honest, is it really possible to top Black Dynamite?
