I know that Derrick already started a top films thread, but I just made my official list. Sorry for any redundancies. Quite an impressive year, coming off of 2009, which I will defend to the death as the worst year in the history of cinema. So, here it is:
JAY D. SHELTON'S TOP TEN FILMS OF 2010
1. BLACK SWAN (Aronofsky) 2. THE GHOST WRITER (Polanski) 3. THE SOCIAL NETWORK (Fincher) 4. HEREAFTER (Eastwood) 5. THE RUNAWAYS (Sigismondi) 6. ANOTHER YEAR (Leigh) 7. EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP (Banksy) 8. MARWENCOL (Malmberg) 9. JOAN RIVERS: A PIECE OF WORK (Stern, Sundberg) 10. RABBIT HOLE (Mitchell)
Honorable Mention (IN NO ORDER) - THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, GREENBERG, TRUE GRIT, RESTREPO, TOY STORY 3, WINTER'S BONE, KICK-ASS
Films that I haven't seen yet, but want to, and which may eventually force me to alter the list - BLUE VALENTINE, 127 HOURS, ANIMAL KINGDOM, INSIDE JOB, SOMEWHERE

Not for anybody who cares, and apparently not many do, I have just seen BLACK SWAN and have had to alter my list dramatically.

Not for anybody who cares, and apparently not many do, I have just seen BLACK SWAN and have had to alter my list dramatically. With the exception of Inception, Black Swan was the best film I saw in 2010--a film, incidentally, that absolutely needed Natalie Portman's chilly, off-putting beauty to work as well as it did.

Absolutely, Thomas. Eduardo, what did you think of JOAN RIVERS? Did you two make a final list?

I liked JR. Personally, I'm more interested in her early career than in what she does today but her compulsion to keep working was clearly the focus. I thought it was interesting that she lives this opulent lifestyle, yet constantly bemoans how she has no money. And it was really depressing that for all her work ethic she cared less for what the audience thinks than the critics and cans her play entirely when it gets a lukewarm reception.
I'm not sure I saw 10 movies in the theater last year, so my list is futile. I liked INCEPTION, SOCIAL NETWORK and TRUE GRIT. But my absolute favorite film, which I've yet to see on anyone's 10 Best List was BROOKLYN FINEST, a sensational, tough melodrama in the American tradition -- great cast, great filmmaking.

Well, I wil seek it (BROOKLYN'S FINEST) out.
I only saw about half in the theatre myself, my friend gets Academy screener copies and we just pour through them.

I haven't seen the movie yet so this is just my theory: Joan Rivers comes from an entirely different time, entertainment wise. I remember when I was kid watching her on The Ed Sullivan Show. Back then critics could (and did) make or break careers. That's a hard mindset to get out of after living with it for most of one's professional career.
