Here's the information I've found out about the film. Apparently it will be set in the 60s and feature Xavier and Magneto working together. Xavier apparently will not be in a wheelchair and will not be bald. They'll be going up against the Hellfire Club.
The cast is as follows:
James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr / Magneto Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw January Jones as Emma Frost / White Queen Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy / Beast Jennifer Lawrence as Raven Darkholme / Mystique Oliver Platt as "The Man in Black" Zoë Kravitz as Angel Salvadore Caleb Landry Jones as Sean Cassidy / Banshee Lucas Till as Alex Summers / Havok Edi Gathegi as Armando Muñoz / Darwin Jason Flemyng as Azazel Álex González as Janos Quested / Riptide Tony Rich as Thomas
I'm a bit speechless about this movie. Despite Matthew "Kick-Ass" Vaughn directing, this cast is pretty stupid. Not the actors who they've got lined up, but the characters.
You've got a movie called X-Men: First Class and the only member of the actual first class you're using is Beast? And then they've tossed in extremely recent characters like Angel Salvadore, Azazel and Darwin into the team instead of using Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Iceman and Angel?
Not only that, but there are so many classic characters who haven't really gotten a fair shake in the films and they're being passed over for newcomers, two of which have only been X-Men for all of five minutes and one who is a villain.

This is a movie I long ago regulated to: 1) I'll catch it on DVD or 2) wait until I can see it for free.

The trailer is out for First Class: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrbHykKUfTMNot really much about this except that it confirms a lot of fears I had. I was praying that all the talk of the character choices made for this film was just disinformation. But no, it's true. And with the exception of Fassbender's portrayal of Magneto, this looks like it will be absolute crap that can't even follow the continuity of the X-Men films. I don't expect Fox to follow the continuity of the comics. But they can't even follow the continuity they created and we're only talking four movies.

Since watching the trailer I've actually upgraded X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and I'm now planning on seeing it in the theaters. I do think that if it's set in the 60's it should look more like that time period in terms of dress/hairstyles. But I'm intrigued.

I think they kinda worked themselves into a corner they couldn't fight their way out of with the cast. Sure, it's First Class but the first we saw of Scott was in 'Wolverine' ('70s I think). Iceman wasn't even born during this movie since we saw him as a teen in X1. Angel was also an unknown in X3. They pieced together their continuity so haphazardly that if they tried to use the original First Class it would be impossible. X3 also ruled out Jean because we saw when Mags and Xavier approached her, which I think would've been the '80s. The only character they even had a chance to use was Beast. And I think with Beast it's within the realm of possibility for him to be older than he looks since we don't know everything about him from his single appearance in X3 outside of once being at the school. The only chance they had was to go elsewhere and more recent. The only stretch is White Queen but I think there's a bit of plausible denialbility to the girl we saw in Wolverine because of the diamond skin. If First Class ignores that then despite the obvious similarities that girl in Wolverine becomes the discrepency...and being in a shitty bad movie only helps me forget her all the more. I think they could've likely done a better job with the cast choices, but the really jagged way they built the team in the 3 X-Men movies really impaired their ability to do something smart...especially X3 (and the others in Wolverine) with the over abundance of wasted cameos that just dried the well even more for a First Class crew. FOX could've just made life easier by following the progression a little bit better than they did X1, but they didn't and they had to deal with it and now I hope the movie they put out is able to compensate for the hole they put themselves in with what we understand from the comic to be First Class.

Another movie I've got high hopes for is the new CONAN movie which I think hits theaters in July or August. The the number #1 movie I'm waiting for? Zack Snyder's SUCKER PUNCH. Without a doubt there's no other movie I want to see (well, maybe the TINTIN movie) more this year than that.

Well said, Erik. I think what happened was Fox, just like with The Last Stand and Wolverine, didn't put much thought into this movie. And now they've got this obsession ever since Wolverine to tie historical events in with the X-Men -- in the Wolverine film, the Three Mile Island incident was because of Logan and Victor's battle with (ugh) Weapon XI and now in this film, it's going to be the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Fox had two tracks they could have gone on with this film. They could have either done a straight-up reboot -- in which case, use the original X-Men. If it's called First Class, then it should actually feature the first class. And I'm not entirely sold on an X-Men film in the 60s, but fair enough, give it a shot.
Or they could have gone the other route and done a prequel featuring Xavier and Magneto having their fall-out around the time Xavier forms his first team. It's already been established in the movies that Cyclops, Jean, Storm and Beast were his first students, so use a team featuring them and then throw in maybe Banshee.
I think what happened is Fox wanted to do a reboot but then after production began, they decided, "let's make this in-continuity instead." Which has led to an extremely bizarre mishmash of characters and concepts that make no logical sense when viewed in the continuity of the other films. And now all their senseless mutant cameos have come to bite them in the ass, because now Fox is REALLY scraping the bottom of the barrel for mutants to use (seriously, Angel Salvadore, Darwin and Azazel?).
I really hope the day will come soon when Disney says to Fox, "enough is enough, we want that X-Men money, we're buying back the rights" and then Marvel Studios can make a proper X-Men film, like X2.

Yeah. An '80s X-Men movie would've made the most sense. They could've used the 4 you mentioned above very easily and fit it in better with what they've revealed so far over the 4 movies. The only problem in that would be having to CGI Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen's face for an entire 2hr feature. But, they did it for TRON LEGACY.

I don't care if Fox had to blow most of their budget on that de-aging technology, Stewart and McKellen playing younger versions of Xavier and Magneto interests me far more than McAvoy and Fassbender playing the younger parts, and they'd knock it out of the park.
As it stands, Fassbender seems the only remotely interesting thing about First Class.

X-Men: 1st Class will be a popcorn movie, period. Following the logic of this movie Beast and Mystique would be in their high 50's or low 60's at least when the first movie came out. And I call bullshit on that.
Secondly the only reason they shoe-horned all those characters into X3 and now First Class is so the rights won't revert back to Marvel/Disney.
Sucker Punch has been mentioned and I am VERY curious to see it. The only hesitation I have is I don't see how it can fulfill the promise that the trailer has given me.
