I've never really been a Trek fan but my dad loves it, especially TNG. And as a kid, I would sometimes watch TNG with him. I enjoyed Generations as a kid, but after watching it again a few years ago, I realized how bad it is. First Contact was great and I always loved The Undiscovered Country. But before Undiscovered Country, I hadn't seen any of the Star Trek films. About a year or two ago, I found a box set of all six TOS films on sale for around $40 and picked it up.
I find I pretty much agree with Derrick and Michael on the films (except I never saw Insurrection and Nemesis and I feel even more justified in not watching them). Undiscovered Country was a brilliant movie, probably the most intellectual of the films to date. And like Michael, I absolutely love the reboot.
Yes, there are problems with the film and yes, Bana is a failure as the villain (which was the biggest surprise for me as I expected him to be the best part of this movie). But over all, I dug the hell out of it. Enjoyable from beginning to end.
Tom may have a point with the fan service, but as someone who's never been a fan of Star Trek, I did not notice any of it. Had I done a marathon of all the films before I watched the reboot, then I probably would have noticed it. But over all, I thought the reboot was very effective, it did a good job of bringing in new people to the series who may have never given it a chance before (for whatever reason, one of the big ones I think is the social stigma), and it did it while still respecting what came before. It's a fine line to walk and I think Abrams, whom I normally detest, pulled it off. So I'm onboard for the sequel. And it was nice to actually see a monster or two in this film, as opposed to Abrams' so-called "monster" movie, Cloverfield.
The three that stand out in my mind are the reboot, Undiscovered Country and Wrath of Khan. Which one I like better really depends on my mood is at the time.
