And here I thought I was the only one to love the Roger Corman produced, Charles Beaumont scripted Brain Dead...I think I may have the third film for the coming-in-January 2011 Obscure Films Episode

Quite a few of these are non-American films that never released theatrical distribution in the U.S., which says much about how little of global cinema makes it here. I didn't realize it when I first read the list, but Innocent Moves is the (terrible!) UK title of Searching For Bobby Fischer, which is indeed a great movie. I've seen about ten other films on the list, and can't disagree about any of them. If you haven't seen Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole, try it; it is prophetic about the rise of a sensational media creating news through exploitation (but it was a box-office flop in 1950). James

Interesting, though I think a lot of these are pretty justly rated (ALICE.... BEFORE THE DEVIL..., LANGAAN) I also blanche to see any film "...Of All Time" list that has so many titles from the recent past.

I'm not sure if the thinking here is films with undeserved poor reputations or that are just lost to time or generally unheralded, but here are a few I'd site:
THE COTTON CLUB (as discussed here before) STAR 80 CELEBRITY TRUE BELIEVER MOVIE / MOVIE

I think the problem people had with THE COTTON CLUB was that since it was a gangster movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola, they were looking for another GODFATHER. I myself was delighted that THE COTTON CLUB was nothing like THE GODFATHER. I don't think it's a better or worse film than THE GODFATHER which is really in a class of it's own. It's simply a different type of gangster movie dealing with a different set of gangsters. I think it's a wonderful movie.

What's also interesting is which films DO make it here. When I came to Japan, I thought people would know all the Japanese films I've watched. To my shock, most of the Japanese films popular outside the country are completely unknown inside Japan.
Stir of Echoes, Perfect Blue (they're only referring to the animated version here but there is a live-action one I've yet to see), Fearless, The City of Lost Children, Better Off Dead, and Open Your Eyes are all amazing films.
