Fellas, Great episode as always, although I disagree with you guys about Iron Man 2. I didn't like that movie much at all...although the appearance of Mjolnir after the credits did fill me with geek chills. You guys spoke a little bit about DC's "First Wave" and Doc Savage's origins, and I wonder if you've ever heard of the late Philip Jose Farmer's "Wold Newton Family," in which Doc is a member of. Farmer postulated in both "Tarzan Alive" and "Doc Savage: An Apocalyptic Life," that the Duke of Holdernesse from Doyle's "The Adventure of the Priory School" was in fact the Duke of Greystoke and his illegitimate son was James Clarke Wildman, who became "Clark Savage, Sr.," Doc's father. Farmer had Arronaxe Larsen, the granddaughter of "20,000 Leagues Beneath the Seas'" Ned Land, as Doc's mother. To learn more, check out Win Scott Eckert's "The Wold Newton Universe" page: www.pjfarmer.com/woldnewton/Pulp.htmReally fascinating stuff.

HSN,
My guess is that you must not have been listening to BiTD for long or you'd know all about how I feel about Pulps.

HSN, My guess is that you must not have been listening to BiTD for long or you'd know all about how I feel about Pulps. I've been listening for about a year, and surmised you were a fan of the pulps, especially since you created your own pulp-style character in Dillon, but I wasn't sure if you knew about the WNU.

Anybody who calls themselves a fan of the pulps and doesn't know about the WNU needs to be beat senseless with a burlap bag full of oranges. But it's entirely possible. I constantly run into people who profess to be HUGE movie fans but they can't name a movie past the last big summer blockbuster. Same way I run into people who claim to be major pulp fans but really don't know anything about them. So your skepticism about me knowing/not knowing about the WNU is understandable.

Well, I wanted to bring it to your attention just in case. Thanks for not thinking me of too much of an idiot. I also just wanted to say that I think you guys put on a great show. I work overnights and have a long commute, and Better In the Dark has helped me tremendously to stay awake and continuously entertained. I'm extremely grateful for that. So, please don't stop and keep up the great work.

A friend of mine who works for New York's Transit in a token booth says he listens to the show at work and it helps keep him awake. And there's more than one listener who has told Tom and I that we make their long commute more enjoyable.

And there's more than one listener who has told Tom and I that we make their long commute more enjoyable. Or a 17 hour plane flight. For real. Phillip Jose Farmer wrote a very funny Greatheart Silver story, that included a scene in a nursing home where elderly versions of famous pulp heroes and villains fought each other with wheelchairs and canes. The title escapes me, but it was published in one of the Weird Heroes anthologies. It's great (and shows Farmer had a sense of humor about his obsessions). On the other hand, I gave up on the Riverworld series after the second one. I just couldn't find any enthusiasm to continue. I liked To Your Scattered Bodies Go, but The Fabulous Riverboat had too many scenes of characters spouting political aphorisms at each other, and I started to mentally glaze over. I can enjoy that when Michael Moorcock does it, but with Farmer I didn't. James
