Bamcinematek is hosting a retrospective on vampire films in August and September. This is only a partial list, but Hammer, Universal and AIP (the Yorga films were AIP, yes?) are represented, so far. Of course I'll be out of town for part of this. James www.bam.org/view.aspx?pid=2395

James www.bam.org/view.aspx?pid=2395Yes, the Count Yorga series was the attempt of AIP to create a new 'King of Horror' to replace the aging Vincent Price. I've seen the first, Count Yorga, Vampireor at least most of it and it is.....very tedious, and very 70's. The whole mix of mock-Universal hysterics and hippie goofiness discouraged me from following up with the sequel, The Return Of Count Yorga and the not-really-connected-but-thrown-in-with-the-official-entries The Deathmaster, which doesn't feature Yorga but does feature Quarry as a vampire running a hippie cult. I would love to see the Hammers on the big screen...maybe we should try to make a meet-n-greet out of it?

It terrified me!

I remember Count Yorga, but it was probably more from FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND than the movies themselves. Speaking of vampires, maybe you guys can help me with this one. I have a memory of being very disturbed by a vampire movie I saw on TV in the late '60s. It was in black and white and was probably made in the mid-50s, but I could be way off on that. The one scene that I remember is a terrified female vampire, with dark hair and wearing a white gown, lying on a bed as some men pound a stake into her heart (fairly tight, close-in shot). The part that was burned into my mind was the blood spurtiing up in a continous (at least it seemed to go on forever to me at that age) flow, like the formation you get it a school water fountain. It really disturbed me. I know it's vague, but I've been trying to place that film for years. Anybody? If I get that I'll throw another one out there that I'm looking for.

I would love to see the Hammers on the big screen...maybe we should try to make a meet-n-greet out of it? Sounds like a great idea, but I'll be half way around the world, in Taiwan, for at least half of the series, including the two Hammers they've scheduled so far. Believe me, I'd love to see Dracula's Daughter (30s Universal!) and Nosferatu as well as the Hammers, on the big screen, but I can't. I'll be missing all of Film Forum's 50's 3-D series, too! However, BAM lists the program as running through September 30. Assuming that's not an error, I'll be back by August 25 and hopefully there'll be more Hammers on the schdule after then. Either way, I can meet and greet for Count Yorga, at least. James
