Tomorrow is Warren Beatty day with rarely shown MICKEY ONE as well as the famed flop THE FORTUNE directed by Mike Nichols with Jack Nicholson, which I believe has never been on VHS let alone DVD. And lastly: KALEIDESCOPE, again -- never shown -- with the lovely and strangely underrated Susannah York.

And lastly: KALEIDESCOPE, again -- never shown -- with the lovely and strangely underrated Susannah York. I'm really looking forward to seeing MICKEY ONE which I've never seen but I've heard about for years. I also want to see THE PARALLAX VIEW, probably the best conspiracy movie ever made. I'm also curious to see ISHTAR again. I saw this movie during its original theatrical run and while I didn't love it I didn't think it was the apocalyptic bomb it was made out to be. I'm curious to see my own reaction to the movie after all these years.

I once laughed my ass off at ISHTAR, but was somewhat chemically altered at the time. I think there's some good stuff in that, but also an aggressive dead spot where they wander around the desert where it seems they're trying way too hard to improvise something funny.

I dimly remember that part: Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty were roaming around in the desert for what seemed like half the movie with a camel.

Just watched MICKEY ONE. What a disappointment.

Tomorrow is Warren Beatty day with rarely shown MICKEY ONE as well as the famed flop THE FORTUNE directed by Mike Nichols with Jack Nicholson, which I believe has never been on VHS let alone DVD. And lastly: KALEIDOSCOPE, again -- never shown -- with the lovely and strangely underrated Susannah York. I'm not sure why THE FORTUNE doesn't enjoy a more prominent reputation as one of the most god-awful, unrelentingly shitty, high profile misfires in film history. Eighty-eight minutes of unrelieved torture to sit through. I see that Mike Nichols didn't have another film come out for 8 years after this. KALEIDOSCOPE on the other hand, was a buried gem. A great opening hook and some solid plot twists (maybe a bit reminiscent of the novel Casino Royale) and only one curious lull where the action stops dead for a long introduction of the villain of the piece. Great swinging 60s London and Paris locales -- and cars! And the whole thing is fueled by Beatty and angel-faced York's having actual romantic chemistry! They make a terrific pair. (Less convincing is the relationship between York and her "father" -- Clive Revill -- who's only 9 years older than the actress.)

Clearing my cache of yesterday's Lee Remick festival, tracing her progress from luscious, understated, ingenue to brassy, big-haired, "handsome" middle aged co-star:
THE RUNNING MAN a low-key caper directed by Carol Reed starring Laurence Harvey as Lee's scheming pilot husband who fakes his death to scam the insurance company that wronged him. He's changed his identity -- but can he shake persistent investigator Alan Bates? And what's Alan really up to anyway? Remick is gorgeous and both her co-stars are in good form. Less than 90 minutes, this well-plotted picture -- never on DVD, could be harvested for a remake.
TELEFON, a Charles Bronson thriller directed by Don Siegel about crazed, rogue Russian Donald Pleasance activating sleeper Soviet terrorists in the US. Remick and Charlie (who isn't introduced for 25 minutes into the picture) are KGB agents trying to stop him. Despite a good supporting cast and a really, pretty witty script, this picture is unfortunately hopelessly dated and creaky in it's details.
The big find here was HENNESEY the controversial IRA thriller from 1974, that ingeniously inter-cuts it's DAY OF THE JACKAL style assassination plot with real footage of the British royal family. This sparked outrage, and the film was banned in that country -- I think it may still be. It's a solid thriller, though given the suicide bomber subject matter, a little hard to enjoy. Really picks up at the climax. Terrific supporting cast.

Delete whatever you guys have to in order to make room on your DVRs. Tomorrow at 12 midnight TCM is going to show that brilliantly deranged masterpiece THE STUNT MAN starring Peter O'Toole, Steven Raislback and Barbara Hershey.

Speaking of "deranged" and Steve Railsback, the MGM-HD channel show LIFEFORCE all the time, which I only just watched for the first time. Um...wow.

Derrick -
My band is practicing on Saturday, so I don't know what my schedule is yet. BAM is also running Mario Bava's Planet of the Vampires on the same day, as part of the same series. It would be great if it's a double bill, but if there is separate admission, I'll probably choose the Bava.
By the way - Film Forum tonight has a triple bill of William Castle, including two of the Whistler movies. New 35mm prints for all three. I'd go, but given how long it would take me to get home (the last film wraps around 11), I have to pass.

Every Friday night in October is Hammer-time, including some pretty rare titles. There are only two Hammer Dracula films I haven't seen. Fortunately, TCM is running one of them, Dracula: Prince of Darkness. Unfortunately, they're not running Scars of Dracula. (Also, I wish TCM was running Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell. I have seen it, but it's the only Hammer Frankenstein film I don't own on DVD). James

I just looked through my Hammer box set and don't seem to have any of the films that you haven't seen. Could they be using alternate titles?
