CBS ran a piece on Ian Fleming and the James Bond novels this morning. I think what I found most interesting was that he came up with Bond's name as Bond was the author of a book on west Indian birds. They also show some footage of the TV Casino Royale. I also didn't make the connection between Ian Fleming and Lucy Fleming, his niece who starred in the 70's Terry Nation series, Survivors.
You might be able to find the piece on the CBS website or it might wind up later today on You Tube.

Yeah, Ian Fleming wanted the plainest name he could come up with for his character and that book on bird watching in The West Indies, written by James Bond was on his desk.
And next time you watch DIE ANOTHER DAY watch the scene where Bond is in Cuba and he's preparing to go spy on the genetic laboratory. He's going to pretend he's watching birds and so borrows a pair of binoculars and a copy of BIRDS OF THE WEST INDIES. There's no author name on the cover but that's the book. I thought it was a pretty clever nod to the source of Bond's name for those of us who know.

I watched the TV Casino Royale as part of the class I took on Bond films in college. Our professor was a Brit and spent most of the time doing a running commentary of how awful he thought the films was. "Jimmy Bond!"
