Derrick made the point I often reflect on. Why aren't movies ever re-released? There has to be some money studios can make from their libraries on the big screens and not just via home video. Relatively recently the initial STAR WARS trilogy and THE EXORCIST were successfully re-leased. I know the print costs might be steep -- but I bet there are people who would go see JAWS or the early Bonds on the big screen even if they could already watch it at home. (After all, they'll be able to watch IRON MAN II in two months, but still pay full price to see it now.) I agree with Derrick this should be done more often, not sure why it isn't. When I was a kid there where certain large old theaters that simply never played run-of-the-mill fare. If there wasn't a prestigious epic or big screen adventure out, they would simply cull a wide-screen picture and screen that. (This is why I saw DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, LAWRENCE and APOCALYPSE NOW many times on the big screen during high school.)
Another thing I'm curious about -- why don't they bring back the double feature? Industry people bemoaned the fact that recent, solid grown-up fare like THE INTERNATIONAL, STATE OF PLAY and DUPLICITY bombed -- why not release these together on a double-bill and try to recoup some of the money? (Or comparable titles that are from the same studios.) I just don't get this. Again, when I was a kid in the 'burbs, I'd say that 75% of the times I went to the theater it was to see double features of movies that were in their second run. These prints exist -- re-circulate them before the titles come out on DVD. (I can't speak to the re-release notion, but this business model simply must make sense profit-wise.)
On a different topic raised on this last show. I'm also not really into super skinny women, but Zoe Saldana is hot as balls. I've been into her ever since I saw the ballet movie CENTER STAGE, and I waited (and waited...) for her to break big ever since. She's a really good actress and so effing sexy. There's a black family drama called (I think) CONSTELLATION -- and she's a revelation in that. I love how she's unafraid to come across as kind of bitchy and sad and not at all cutesy. Yes, she's skinny -- but doesn't look unhealthy to me. (Nor does her frame sprout any wildly out-of whack fake body parts.) I'm glad to see her finally get her due, as frequently hot black actress never break out the way they should. For instance, where are Meagan Good or Joy Bryant these days?
