This was instantly one of my favorite episodes you've done. Not just cause it was on Tarantino but because of the concept of the episode. I have to agree that a probation sentence is appropriate seeing how well Inglourious Basterds came out. A little focus is all QT needs to continue to be an amazing director. And he really needs to get to those DVDs.

And I'm glad you enjoyed it and I know that Tom does also. It was a blast to do and Tom and I already have other directors we're thinking of hauling into Director's Court but if you've got suggestions for directors you think should stand before our bench then by all means, holla if you hear me. And that goes for the rest of you, too! ;D

We've already got our next defendent ready to be hauled up before the judges--a certain gentleman by the name of Kevin Smith. Except that session to be broadcast in January just in time for his new movie, Couple of Dicks, to come out.

I think Robert Rodriguez would be fun for this, but then again, does he really need to go to court yet?

I think Robert Rodriguez would be fun for this, but then again, does he really need to go to court yet? The only thing I'd haul Robert Rodriguez into our court for is being guilty of giving Frank Miller the idea that he can direct a movie. There's far better fat targets for us to pick: Brett Ratner, Michael Bay, Brian DePalma, George Lucas (and yes, folks...Lucas is a TERRIBLE director. I said it. You deal with it) Moustapha Akkad, Jan DeBont, John Carpenter, the list just goes on and on and on....

I can tell you, Kelen, that we definitely have Kevin Smith, John Carpenter and Brian DiPalma on our docket in the coming months. I'd like to put Richard Kelly (of DONNIE DARKO fame) up before the judges as well, but I'm not sure if Derrick would be interested.
Of course, we don't want to waste some of the most egregious offenders right away...and I also think we want to choose directors who are more open to interpretation rather than using the Court as an excuse to say 'this ass-munch sucks' over and over.

Hasn't Richard Kelly only made something like two or maybe three films? I know he did SOUTHLAND TALES which I've heard mixed opinions on. People who have seen it tell me wits either one of the best movies they've ever seen or it's utter and total garbage. And that leaves DONNIE DARKO. Unless he's made more films you're familair with, Tom. And agreed...we want The Director Court epsiodes to be objective, clinical examinations of where a director's work went off the rails, why it did so and how he can get it back on track. I know that some individuals who listen to us would be happy for Tom and I to just say "Michael Bay sucks" over and over for 60 minutes (you know who you are) but we're not going that route. Besides, I kinda like the sound of "Michael Bay munches ass" much better.

Kelly has made three. I liked Donnie Darko (the original cut more than the "director's cut" that emerged a few years later). I haven't seen Southland Tales yet.
His third film, The Box, adapted from a Richard Matheson short story, is being released to theaters in a month or so. It was previously filmed as an episode of the 80's Twilight Zone revival. (That version was directed by Peter Medak, who also directed two great movies I've seen, The Ruling Class and Let Him Have It). Kelly's film finished production early last year. I don't know why it has taken so long to get a general release, but I'm sure there's a story behind it.
By the way - regarding Mustapha Akkad, the Horror Etc. podcast is running their own marathon of the Halloween films. It's the third podcast I follow that's done it, and I never get bored, even though I know 4 and 5 aren't going to get any better.
I prefer raking Brett Ratner over the coals and sparing Michael Bay. I don't like Bay's films, but whatever they are, they're in a unique style. Plus, the Armageddon DVD helped keep Criterion afloat for a few years, god bless him.

Counting The Box, that's three...but they're three very controversial, very devisive films that I think justify us evaluating his career and determining whether he's a truly visionary director following some unknown vision, or a guy making shit up. But that's just me...

The reason I'm reluctant to take Akkad to Director's Court is that the man has passed on...and I'm loathe to speak ill of the dead.

This was also one of my favorite episodes you guys have done and it came at the perfect time because I've been on a bit of a Tarantino kick lately. I thought you guys were spot-on with your comments and Derrick's comments about Ronin and Kiss Me Deadly got me interested in both those films, so I've got them downloading now (no rental places in my rural Japanese town unfortunately).
