I'm curious: do you guys watch movies that Tom and I recommend on various episodes? And if so do you find our recommendations right on point or disappointing?

As I mentioned on another thread, I rented The Assassination Bureau based on your recommendation, and I loved it. I've added other films I heard about on the show to my Netflix queue, which is very, very long.
I also have to admit with embarssment that I bought the DVDs of The Witchfinder General after listening to the Vincent Price episode, and Cemetery Man - five bucks at J&R Movie World for that one - after listening to the Halloween show, but I haven't gotten around to watching either yet. My backlog of unwatched DVD purchases is just about as long as my Netflix queue.

Tom's going to be happy about CEMETARY MAN. If you ever meet him in person he's going to insist you watch that movie,.

By the way - there's a terrific new book that was published about two weeks ago, Zombie Movies: The Ultimate Guide by Glenn Kay, that I can't recommend highly enough. It's a history of the genre crossed with a video guide, and Cemetary Man gets a serious, glowing write-up. Kay gives most of the films he reviewed a few paragraphs, but the best films get several pages, including CM. Kay argues that the movie is the last great film of the Italian zombie genre that started with Fulci's Zombie in 1979. (Also, the book is up-to-date enough to include George Romero's Diary of the Dead. Like myself, and unlike many critics, Kay liked it. On the other hand, he slams Return of the Living Dead 3, which I kind of liked).

I saw Phantasm based on your recommendation and it's now one of my favorite horror films.

Recently I've watched "The Wicker Man" though not in direct recommendation of you guys. I had rent it several times without coming across to watch it. But after your episode, I just had to see it. I thoroly enjoyed it as more of the weird essence of this particular society got to me than I'd think. Plus, veneration towards fallic shapes does seem like an healthy start for a new society. lol
If I reminisce, I remember last year's Halloween show as being an helpful one. Saw Phantasm because of it and enjoyed quite much. Coscarelli has been one of my favorite directors ever since. Another that caught my ear was Cemetary Man mostly because of Tom's high praise of this movie. For over a year, I've been looking for it at my not-so-local repertory Video Club as they have a huge Cult movies section. It was listed in their catalogue so every now and then I'd go look under Michele Soavi's section to see if it was there. Never turned up. This past Halloween I talked to my friend about the movie and he never heard of it, so I gave myself the mission into finding it. Just as I was about to subscribe to a NetFLix-like service that had it (I'm from Canada and we don't get the popular service that Netflix seems to be down the border) I finally found it on an undisclosed location (merely, the internet). So I have it in my possession but haven't checked it yet. Waiting to see it with a friend so I can share the experience but I'm rather thrilled by the idea of watching it.
I'm sure there are plenty of other ones that I've rented subconsciously because of the podcast. Anyways, always great to get recommendations that are most of the times off the radar. Thanks!

I think what drew me and, and continues to compel me back, is that weird essence you refer to--that sense of wrongness that slowly creeps up on you throughout the film's running time. If you like Bruce Campbell, try to see Coscarelli's Bubba Ho-Tep, an adaptation of the a classic Joe Lansdale novella, in which Elvis Presley and John F. Kennedy fightt a mummy in cowboy boots. Ahhhh....I love this movie--as you mentioned in your comments...although I'll be the first to say it's an acquired taste. I hope you'll let us know what you thought of it! You're more that welcome. I know I can speak for Derrick when I say that knowing we're turning you onto movies you might not have considered otherwise makes it all worthwhile.

One of the reasons I love this show is because I watched a lot, and I mean A LOT of television and movies in my younger years, in Mexico and in Spanish. Unfortunately for me, this meant that I got to watch movies with different titles, as some movies get renamed in the foreign markets.
One example is El AvispĆ³n Verde. I loved that series, and upon coming to the U.S. I was completely unaware I was a fan of the Green Hornet. Not until you guys. You guys have recently turned me onto more shows than I could have remembered by pure chance. I am now a huge Doc Savage, Green Hornet, and Zoro fan. I enjoy all the reviews you guys do and find myself looking up old serials and such at my local library and on the Internet via Netflix and youtube.
I am grateful for the service you provide and I just wanted to let you know, that Yes, I do watch movies you guys recommend.
