As most of you know by now, I no longer post movie reviews here now. Not that I don't love the message board any longer or don't want to share with you guys. It's just that I had gotten a lot of suggestions from folks that I really should put my movie reviews on a blog of their own. Which I have done. Some of the reviews that are here are also up at THE FERGUSON THEATER. But rest assured that these aren't the exact same reviews. Most of them have been rewritten to reflect new thoughts or insights I've had since the reviews were first written. Okay? Okay! Then bounce on over to derricklferguson.wordpress.com/ and enjoy the show!

I really liked your review of TOMMY (1975), but we definitely differ in our conclusions. As a young teen I went to see Elton John, and came out a life long Who addict. I've watched it again recently and still thoroughly enjoyed myself. I actually prefer the soundtrack to the original LP, which was recorded before Daltrey had found his "voice". Sure, it was in your face with it's message, but the whole thing was over the top - visually, thematically and with the performances., knowing the work of Russell and Townshend, probably intentionally. Incidentally (I'm sure you already got this), the flirting between Margret and Nicholson is an homage to their relationship in Mike Nichols' CARNAL KNOWLEDGE (1971). Aside from the bloodrush inducing finale and the music, my favorite bits are the interactions between Keith Moon and Oliver Stone. And you are right on about Ann Margret's special scene.

What's Tom gonna do when he sees someone conflate Oliver Reed with...gulp...Stone? Stand back. What always frustrated me about TOMMY -- and the soundtrack -- is I much prefer those passages where the actors sing than when the singers do. Reed and are A-M are both really good in the movie's beginning.

Ann-Margaret is an actress Tom and I really have to do a Great, Great (Wo)Man episode on as we've expressed our admiration for her many times. And she's from that period in my life when I was really discovering what Truly Hot Women were all about...I'm talking about her, Joey Heatherton, Lola Falana and of course, Pam Grier who to me is The Most Beautiful Woman EVER.
