Have you guys ever thought about doing a show on Japanese animated movies? The films by Hayao Miyazaki are some of my favorites as well as the epic Akira and the Apple Seed movie from 2005.

I'm not big on anime as a whole, although we did have a discussion somewhere early in the series about my favorite anime, Cowboy BeBop. Still, I will discuss it with Derrick and we will see what we will see....

Hayao Miyazaki is one of my favorite filmakers with LAPUTA: CASTLE IN THE SKY and PORCO ROSSO as my top two favorite films he's done. In addition, THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO is one of the ten best action/adventure films ever made as far as I'm concerned. Both Tom and I really aren't as well schooled as we would like on Japanese anime but there's an associate of ours named Dino Pollard, an excellent writer and something of a self-educated expert in Japanese film and anime. In fact, he just recently moved to Japan. We've been trying for the longest to schedule him to be a guest host on the show so we can talk about Japanese films.

I like the sound of a Hayao Miyazaki episode. My favorite is still the first one I ever saw, Princess Mononoake.

You not gonna believe this but I have PRINCESS MONONAKE on DVD but haven't even cracked it out of the case. I've got about 20 movies on DVD that I've bought from Wal-Mart's Two for $10 bin. The movies are stacked up next to my TV set and I haven't watched 'em yet.

Derrick, you have to crack open that Princess Mononoke! What a great movie. I keep saying that I'm going to take a weekend and just watch all those movies I haven't cracked open yet but I still haven't done it. So many movies and so little time... ;D...if I didn't have to bother with stuff like eating, sleeping and working there's no tellling what I could do....

I'm looking forward to when we can do that. It's especially interesting to see how the Japanese react when I've told them about Japanese films I've seen and I've been to some of the places where a few of the Japanese movies we've been thinking of discussing are set. As far as anime films in particular go, I'd recommend you guys take a look at Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and particularly Perfect Blue. The latter is an interesting blend of a Hitchcock-esque thriller with animation.
