I know that I should find places for LAUGH-IN and ED SULLIVAN. I tried to watch some Flip Wilson recently and it's not as funny as I remember it being as a kid. Sometimes it's not a good thing to go back and revisit some of those old shows. I watched some HEE-HAW reruns last summer and they were nowhere near as funny as I remembered. But to be honest, 75% of those jokes weren't all that funny back then. But I believe that thing somehow managed to stay on the air for 20+ years! The one segment of the show that never failed to crack me up was the "Gloom, Despair and Agony" song. Flip Wilson was Must Watch TV before the phrase was coined decades later. At least in black households. No matter what else was going on or what you were doing, everybody stopped to watch Flip Wilson.

Here's my revised list to include talk shows/variety shows as well as some of my favorite shows I forgot/neglected to include in my original list. Derrick -- THE AVENGERS is the only spy show on your list? No 24 / M:I / U.N.C.L.E. / SAINT / SECRET AGENT ? Speaking of which, wrongly omitted from my list and the best show I'd never even heard of 'til recently is the 70s British series THE SANDBAGGERS. Stunning. To be honest, I never considered 24 to be a spy show. It's a big budget version of a Saturday Morning serial. Just like those serials it was shown once a week and ended on a clifhanger. While I watched MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. and SECRET AGENT and enjoyed them I wasn't as crazy about them as I was about THE PRISONER, THE AVENGERS, THE WILD, WILD WEST or THE PERSUADERS. Oh, man...did I ever love THE PERSUADERS! And while I have little respect for Roger Moore as James Bond he was absolutely perfect as Simon Templar. I think that character was much more suited to Mr. Moore's light and breezy style of acting. Indeed, so successful was Moore as The Saint that even though there have been two more TV series based on The Saint and a feature film, none of them even came close to the success of the Roger Moore series.

And Lisa Kudrow's character from MAD ABOUT YOU was the sister of her character on FRIENDS which pulls that show into the SEINFELD universe, which gets problematic as I think Courtney Cox may have dated Jerry as someone else. (I also recall George Clooney showing up on FRIENDS as an ER doctor, so not sure if that brings that show into play or not...) The episode with Courtney Cox was, I think, called "The Dry Cleaner," and revolved around Jerry staying in a relationship with Cox's character because of a dry cleaning discount one of them had. I don't recall if the character was named clearly...so maaaaaybe it could be Monica. I think the Clooney appearance--which I think happened in the episode where Marcel The Monkey got a part in a John Claude Van Damme movie--was just a joke, and does not put ER into the same universe as the NBC Comedy block. And now I'm going to go cry because I know far too much about specific episodes of shows I don't care about...

I know that I should find places for LAUGH-IN and ED SULLIVAN. I tried to watch some Flip Wilson recently and it's not as funny as I remember it being as a kid. I remember when WWOR, in an attempt to expand on their sudden foothold in the early-evening hours thanks to the purchase of The Benny Hill Show package--and capitalizing on Goldie Hawn's then-popularity as a movie star--started re-running Laugh-In. I watched it...and was unmoved mostly. But then, I remember watching the revival of Laugh-In with, among others, Robin Williams and Not Quite Getting It. Of course, the best thing George Schlattert ever did was arguably The Comedy Factory, a syndicated stand-up show where he's intermingle routines from three or four stand-up comedians every episode, building larger 'routines' around themes...a very simple idea that was very effective. I'm not sure, but I think this may have been the first place I saw Brett Butler, back when she was this smoking hot southern belle and not a cracked out celebrity rehab case...
