One heretic reporting for duty. Both HIGH NOON and SHANE are overrated. QUICK AND THE DEAD is cute, but no classic.

HIGH NOON is one of the most overrated movies I've ever seen. I simply cannot stand that movie and I'm the guy who's willing to cut any western a break. But not HIGH NOON. SHANE we can disagree on. It's earned it's place in movie history. We again agree on THE QUICK AND THE DEAD. The miscasting of Sharon Stone sinks this movie. But the rest of the cast is a blast to watch as they're all obviously having a ball. And it's nice to see Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio in a western.

Don't get me wrong, I like both those pictures -- but they're overrated. With SHANE (which like most classic Westerns, I saw for the first time fairly recently) when it was over I was like -- "That's it?" I had expected to have some kind of religious experience the way people talk about that movie. (Remember Woody Allen's giant consideration of that in the Times some years ago?) With HIGH NOON, it's very intelligent but for a "ticking clock" thriller, very slow-moving. You're so right with Q&TD. I give Sharon Stone credit that when she had the muscle she made an entertaining Western with a powerhouse cast of her choosing, but one that seriously out-classes her. The two pre-stardom names you mentioned but also Gene Hackman in the zone. I watched that last summer with my wife who uncharacteristically sat up and said "Man, that guy's a great actor!"

You beat me to mentioning it. Describing Sharon Stone as miscast is complicated by the fact that she initiated the project and produced the film (in other words, she cast herself). To her credit, hiring Sam Raimi was her idea as well (and she fought the studio to get him the job). I'm not much of a fan of High Noon or Shane, either. Howard Hawks so disliked the former that he made Rio Bravo in response. James

Sharon Stone does indeed get major points for being the straw that stirs the drink. Her choice of director and cast was terrific. Just a damn shame she cast herself. She apparently thought she was making a 'serious' western.
RIO BRAVO is da bomb. But I like EL DORADO better. Hard to beat the combination of John Wayne and Robert Mitchum.
Speaking of which: folks today complain so much about remakes of movies following so closely behind the original. Howard Hawks remade his own movie twice.
And I'm watching RIO BRAVO tonight for maybe the 12th time. And I still can't get over how bizarre the scenes are between John Wayne and Angie Dickenson. It's no wonder Wayne's character is constantly baffled by her behavior.

I don't understand the logic behind this list. They said they wanted to focus on "true classics" that the current generation may not have seen, yet they've got a 90s western in there?
I love The Quick and the Dead, but putting it on a list of twenty-two classic westerns while leaving out Leone's work is criminal.

I'd have been happy to have seen either ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST or THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY on that list. THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES and THE SHOOTIST should also have been on that list.

To their credit, The Playlist included Anthony Mann and Sam Fuller movies on the list. Mann's Westerns aren't as well known as they should be (especially the ones he made with Jimmy Stewart).

Yeah but it also included really well-known westerns like Stagecoach, High Noon, Rio Bravo, and Unforgiven. So I have no idea what qualifies as an unknown classic to them.

I also like EL DORADO better than RIO BRAVO....maybe because it's....um?....I dunno...shorter? RB is just too long. It's odd that the stock of both those films has risen over the years, while RIO LOBO get's no respect, and is perfectly fine. (All of this is tied up with my complicated feelings about The Duke -- cough! overrated cough!) Though I think HONDO is better than SHANE. Also, I rank PALE RIDER higher than UNFORGIVEN. Yeah, this is a pretty lightweight list -- no RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY, BUTCH CASSIDEY, THE PROFESSIONALS,MAGNIFICENT SEVEN.
