There's a rumor I've heard for years and years now and I'm throwing it out here to find out if anybody else has heard this rumor and either disprove or corroborate it. Here goes;
When John Gardner was signed to officially continue the James Bond series, I heard that he was shown a room at Eon Productions full of screenplays for possible Bond films that were rejected for one reason or another. He was told that was free to read them and use any ideas/plots/characters he wanted for his novels. And he supposedly did.
Any of you guys ever heard this rumor or is it just me going goofy?

Any of you guys ever heard this rumor or is it just me going goofy? Hmmmmmmm. I never heard this. Not sure how close the literary estate was to EON, but their author usually did the novelizations of whatever the latest movie was. Did anyone read DEVIL MAY CARE the latest Bond novel? I really enjoyed that, and it was period set.

I read the first two Gardner novels upon their initial release and they left me pretty unimpressed. The only Bond novel by anyone that I've cared for was COLONEL SUN, by Kingsley Amis. In fact, I reread it recently and it still holds up.

In fact, I reread it recently and it still holds up. I think I read the first four or five Gardners and oddly enough, the one that really blew me away was the third, ICEBREAKER. It was based on an actual espionage plan proposed during WWII, and featured the kind of insane criminal base Ken Adams would have drooled to design.

There are elements of COLONEL SUN in DIE ANOTHER DAY, THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH and , if you stretch it a little, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY.
