So this thread has free-associated from THE EXPENDABLES to Ed Lauter to Hitchcock and now is on Altman, all the while with the tag Arnold, et al under an overall thread that namechecks Christina Ricci's nipples? Nice... If you ever see After.Life, you'll realize why I had to namecheck Christina Ricci's nipples. If you really want to see unwatchable Altman, try to sit through Quintet, a weird-ass metaphysical sci-fi in which a bunch of people play a game that just. makes. no. sense. Still, give Altman this--he got to do what he wanted, when he wanted...and while there was as many hits (some would say less hits) as there were misses, you gotta respect him for not giving in and going with the crowd. I'm also a Paul Newman freak and QUINTET has sat in my Netflix queue for years and I make it my business to ensure it never gets to the top of the queue. I'm dreading having to watch that.

Regarding Altman films that haven't been mentioned yet, Thieves Like Us is a terrific movie about bank robbers working during the Depression. I also like Vincent and Theo (with Tim Roth as Vincent Van Gogh) and California Split, and I'll admit it - I really like Popeye. For all the shit it sometimes gets, there are long stretches where it looks like an E.C. Segar comic strip on film.
I haven't seen The Player, but I was disappointed with Short Cuts. I love the Raymond Carver short stories he used, and I thought the film didn't measure up. It's been years since I've seen it, though, so maybe I'd have a different opinion if I re-watched it.
There are a few Altman films I really want to see - Brewster McCloud, Secret Honor (a one man movie with Phillip Baker Hall as Nixon), and O.C. and Stiggs.

I had forgotten VINCENT AND THEO, very good. O.C and STIGGS sucked, but the NATIONAL LAMPOON MAGAZINE stories that it was based on (like the VACATION films) were intelligent, funny and far superior. That was a great magazine! In fact I can say that it, along with FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND, were the magazines that defined who I became. And comic books. And MAD MAGAZINE.
I got food poisoning at a student's grad party last night. I've been puking up buckets and spewing diarrhea ever since. This is horrible. It's a crazy mixed up world, it's a dog eat dog world.

I saw OC & STIGGS, but have no recollection of it whatsoever. I did see SECRET HONOR, and in fact, saw Phillip Baker Hall do the play on-stage somewhere in the village with my brother and like three other people in the audience. That was during a period where Altman did something like 5 stage adaptations in a row. I loved GOSFORD PARK and the DVD has a commentary by the writer Julian Fellowes that is so fascinating I've listened to it twice.
