I have only seen From Hell once, when it was in theaters, but I remember really enjoying it. The film takes some serious liberties with the graphic novel, but I thought it was a good film on its own terms (though it had a major flaw in Heather Graham's not-very-good performance).
A film that captures the breadth of the Alan Moore/Eddie Campbell comic would have to be an episodic television series. I'd like to watch the film again to see if it holds up. One thing the movie did capture very well from the source was the class differences in Victorian England and how they related to the murders, from what I remember.
There were things I liked about V for Vendetta but it really lost me with the Matrix-like fight sequence in the tube station. I felt like I was watching a different (much less interesting) movie.

I've seen From Hell a few times, once in the theater and I've got it on DVD. It's a really cool flick, I recommend it.

I think I saw From Hell the first time on one of the cable movie channels. I was actually surprised in high school when I had a teacher tell me that From Hell was her favorite film. It just completely changed the image I had of that teacher that this very proper sugar sweet southern woman's favorite films involved hookers and murder.

Believe it or not I just saw FROM HELL last night having DVR'ed it from the Independent Film Channel. It would make an excellent Johnny Depp Halloween Double Feature w/ "Sleepy Hollow" which is the best Hammer horror film not made by Hammer...it was a lot different from what I expected when I saw Johnny Depp starring in it. I thought it would be another version of his wonderful Ichabod Crane character from "Sleepy Hollow"

The thing I love about Depp is he tries to do something different in each role. Another movie which I like (although I think I'm the only one) is The Ninth Gate.

I don't think From Hell is a great film, but it's a pretty sensational production, really pleasing to watch again and again. And the DVD is one off the all-time greats, packed with fascinating extras. Perhaps Heather Graham is too gorgeous to be believable as an impoverished Victorian streetwalker, but I think her perfomance is a nice one and that she's generally underrated.
